Why I Use A Canon PowerShot

There are Digital cameras that use AA-size batteries and those that are powered by lithium-ion batteries that only work with a particular type, make or brand of camera. If you travel, particularly if you enjoy remote or rustic locations, choose a camera with AA batteries.

Why?

When a camera that uses proprietary batteries runs out of power, you have no choice but to plug the battery into a power outlet to recharge it. This requires an available outlet, a battery charger, and, if you’re in a foreign country, a power converter. If access to an outlet is ever in doubt, or if you don’t want the hassle of carrying cords and chargers, then the limitations of this system are obvious.

You have the option to purchase the proprietary battery pack your camera uses – but they can be expensive and how many will you need?

If you use a camera that uses AA-size batteries when batteries run out of power on a trip, you can simply throw out the old batteries and drop in a new set of high-performance AAs like the Energizer E2 Lithium line. Two or three sets of such batteries can usually take you through a 10-day trip. If you’re out of high-performance batteries, you also have the option of using standard alkaline batteries, which are available anywhere in the world, and make a cheap and convenient source of backup power (though they only offer a fraction of the life of high performance batteries).

Before you buy check. Get a camera that uses AA batteries if you travel. My Canon PowerShot is one such camera.

  1. Poon Says:

I needed a small digital camera for my wife to carry around. I didn’t want to spend too much. Also I wanted to have it converted to infrared. This camera was exacted what I needed. It is small, responsive, sensitive in very low light situations, cost only $129 to have it converted to “infrared only”. The pictures are great! I carry it with me more than the much heavier in weight and price Canon G-10, also converted to infrared.

Can’t comment on its use as an unconverted camera, but from what I can see, it would have been a good one.

  2. Vales Says:

I love this camera. It takes sharp pictures with good oolor. It is small, easy to use, and responds quickly. I wanted a camera with a viewfinder because I go days at a time with no opportunity to recharge, and so I leave the LCD off.

  3. Aitken Says:

This camera takes professional quality pictures in auto mode! Just hold down the shutter button half way, it automatically focuses, stabilizes, chooses the best seen type, then you press the shutter button all the way down and boom, you have yourself a knock out picture. The LCD screen is so bright and looks like a HDTV Plasma quality image! It takes awesome night time pics as well! I recently went to an Aquarium. I got National Geographic quality photos through the glass by keeping it in auto and pressing the flash button twice to turn off the flash and was amazed! I’ve had so many people on Facebook ask me what kind of camera I have, they can’t believe the quality of the photos I post. I got the camera for $169.99 on Amazon and free shipping! I got the dark gray with the matching gray canon leather case and love it! Buy this camera, you won’t regret it! And remember to get an SDHC memory card. I got the Sandisk 8 GB on Amazon for $11.99, reg. $59.99! Steal it while you can!

It’s a very basic camera that takes pictures that are anything but basic. Very easy to use. Small and light-weight. Excellent picture quality. No complaints.

I love Canon Elph cameras. They take amazing pictures, are easy to use and are the perfect size to take anywhere. I bought this one after my Canon Elph 700 model fell into the water at Busch Gardens. I am so happy with it. They finally improved the first shot delay. With an 18 month old, the delay on my old camera was killing me and I was missing some good moments due to the delay. I am sure that there are better cameras out there but for the price this one is a great choice. Check Consumer Reports, this one is rated as the #1 best buy for compact digital cameras.

  6. Shelton Says:

I’ve been shooting with the SD970 IS for about five months now. It’s a versatile, capable little camera. At first, I thought I’d miss being able to shoot RAW images, but that hasn’t been a problem — I always shoot at the highest resolution and convert imported JPEGs to Photoshop format before post-processing. The macro and digital macro settings work well, and the video is good enough that a friend used some of it professionally as part of an online promotion.

I don’t typically use the face-recognition focus or closed-eyelids alert, but these things do work as advertised. Nor do I use many of the special shooting modes like Portrait, Sunset and such. Some I do find useful are Zoom Blur, Night Snapshot and Long Shutter (which can deliver an exposure of up to 15 seconds). I also use Stitch Assist, but getting in and out of this function is so time-consuming that I usually just guesstimate the overlap and align in Photoshop later.

The only thing I miss is the ability to shoot time-lapse video, which was actually quite useful for me in the SD950 IS.

So far, I haven’t missed an optical viewfinder, either.

The best thing I can say about the SD970 is that I frequently use it alongside my Canon EOS 20D SLR when shooting events professionally and clients have been satisfied with its results.

  7. Razo Says:

We were going on a long vacation and I didn’t want to carry my Canon EOS but wanted quality pictures. After reading online reviews, I purchased the SD970IS. Received camera quicker than expected and was up and running immediately after charging the battery. Fantastic picture quality using my HP C8180 printer. Since we had just purchase HDTV, the HDMI abilities was also a factor in the camera’s favor. Get this camera, anyone can use it.

  8. Kent Says:

I love this camera!!!! It is easy to use & the zoom is awesome.
