Bigger Isn’t Always Better
While digital SLR cameras are quite impressive and take beautiful pictures, they aren’t always the best digital cameras if you’re just looking to take casual pictures. If you just need something to take pictures for vacations or simple family gatherings, then you don’t need a huge camera. Smaller digital cameras can still take great pictures and are much more portable and easy to use, so don’t overlook the small cameras. Checkout the Nikon Coolpix!
First off let me say I really like my Nikon coolpix. But when I was buying the Nikon Coolpix L20 camera as a gift and the leather case was advertised as a companion item. I naturally assumed the camera would actually fit in the case. It did not. The case itself is very nice and I will find other uses for it but felt I was mislead on this purchase.
Nikon Coolpix L20
10.0-megapixel resolution for photo-quality prints up to 16 x 20 inches; 3.6x optical Zoom-Nikkor glass lens; 3.0-inch high-resolution LCD screen; Nikon’s Smart Portrait System; Red-eye Fix, Face Priority AE and more; Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)….
Nikon D5000
The Nikon D5000 digital SLR is intended to be a alternative to the impressive D90 SLR. The D5000 carries many of that camera’s features, including a 12.3-megapixel DX-format sensor and HD movie mode. The D5000 is capable of filming clips in 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. It also has a larger 2.7-inch variable angle LCD display. Nikon has the entry-level SLR down to a science, and the D5000 is an excellent choice for beginners looking to take their photography to the next level.
Nikon L100
10.0-megapixel resolution for photo-quality prints up to 16 x 20 inches; 15x optical wide-angle (28-420mm) Zoom-Nikkor glass lens; 3.0-inch LCD and Electronic Viewfinder; 4-way VR image stabilization; Nikon’s Smart Portrait System; Red-eye Fix, Face Priority AE and more; Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)

I have reviewed several cameras and found the L20 was always rated very well. So far, the pictures that I have taken turned out very nice. The many available features allow you to make your picture or video look like a professional job.
I am looking forward to using this camera for a long time.

It was Murphy’s Law — our digital camera died two days before our big vacation. I didn’t have time to do a lot of research, I just needed another camera. The local camera stores were too pricey, and the staff at the big box stores were useless when it came to helping me select a camera.
These are the times when I love Amazon. I was able to sort by price, read comments, and order with 1-day delivery. Our camera arrived less than 12 hours before our flight departed and I’m thrilled to say that the camera performed beautifully, right out of the box.
Loved the “easy auto” settings, as well as the ability to switch to more manual-style controls to account for sunsets, water glare, overcast skies, etc. The only bad photos out of the batch were the ones when someone stepped into the frame!
We’re pretty camera-savvy, so I didn’t install the software. Instead, we simply pop out the memory card and use the slot on our laptop to download photos.
One note: I probably missed this in my haste, but since this camera comes with internal memory, the package does not include an SD card. Luckily for us, we had a 2 GB card from our deceased camera and were able to reformat it for the Nikon.
Bottom line: a great value, excellent photos, easy to carry in a jeans pocket, and lightening-fast delivery thanks to Amazon! I’d definitely recommend this camera for a no-hassle vacation memory-maker.

I bought this camera based on past experiences with Coolpix cameras, and the L20 carries most of what I’ve liked into the 10-megapixel line. Some pros and cons:
* The use of normal AA batteries is probably the best feature of this camera. It keeps the L20 from being a super-slim, sexy piece of jewelry, but the importance of being able to keep inexpensive spare batteries around, or of being able to just run into a drugstore and buy more batteries in a pinch, is not to be underestimated. I usually use NiMH rechargeables (Kodak brand at the moment, but I have also used Energizer) and have had no problems with the camera.
* The easy-auto mode of the camera pretty much does all the thinking for you. Occasionally, I will switch to macro mode or the scene used for backlit objects, but other than that, it’s strictly point-and-shoot.
* Low-light pictures come out grainier than I would like, but that is to be expected with this level of product.
* My biggest gripe is that Nikon decided to put the SD card slot behind the battery door. I believe they did this to cut down the number of breakable doors on the camera, but I much preferred being able to easily get to the SD card, since I have readers in my PC and laptop. I have almost never used the supplied USB cables for image transfer. Since the battery door is a bit balky, I am afraid that since I’m going to be going in there a lot for the SD card, it is prone to break even more than a standalone door would be. This is not a deal-breaker, but I think Nikon took a step backward.
All in all, I am pleased with Amazon’s pricing and service, as usual. The Nikon L20 is a great little camera.

I gave this camera to my father as a birthday gift. He loved it.
He has been using it underground (he is an avid spelunker / cave radio enthusiast) and overground (he loves railways). He lives in France with my mother; thanks to this camera, I can now see how lovely their garden is.
This camera made my father happy. Therefore, I give it five stars.

This “might” be a good camera, darn if know or have the patience to find out. Lets list pluses first! Packaging: I bought mine at a “box” discount house, requiring a membership fee and home to the $1.50 Hot Dog & Drink! The camera came with a case, 2 gig memory card, battery & charger, instruction book?, and software for about $350. A great buy! I am a 67 yr. old, retired (film) wedding photographer. I own two digital cameras, a small “shirt -pocket” and a Fuji S-20 Pro. First let me say, SET THE WHITE BALANCE first! I read a review of the P90 where all the pictures came out washed out with an “over-exposed” look! He then returned the camera. Had he set the white balance he may still own the camera. I have no doubt this is a fine camera, but as with all the digital cameras of this day, the mfr’s pack too many features into one camera. This is the case here. To get back to the book, had Nikon hired a USA-born “tech writer” I might have keep the camera and struggled to learn all its features. I like to photocopy certain pages of the book and make my own “reference” book, with LARGER type, which I have spiral bound @ the local big box stationary store. The way the book is bound made it difficult to do this. I went to Nikon’s web site and downloaded the instruction book but was unable to print a few pages. Nikon put some “blocks” into their program which prevented me from doing this. I did take a few pictures outside and rushed them to the local quick photo place. The color was GREAT! However the sharpness seemed a bit soft. The layout of the “menu” button is better than with the cameras I own in that it is basic two button affair, but how to access it and use it is a mess to try & understand. I give up, packed up the P90 and will return it today! I love reading the reviews because I pick up some good tid-bits. One other point, in evaluating a camera. I make 11 x 14 print of one of the test pictures! AT $4 or $5 dollars I find out pretty quick if I should keep the camera! It is too bad I could not get that far with the P90!

The body design of this camera is a big minus. I have been using digital cameras of almost all major brands such as Sony, Canon, Pentax and Minolta. My recent purchase of Nikon P90 has brought in mixed reaction on me. I am really happy with the quality of pics (12.1 mp) this camera produces with its awsome 15X optical zoom. During my recent visit to SFO, I could get a crystal clear view of the Alcatraz from pier 39 ground.
The minus aspects are (1) the holding comfort is too bad. The right hand curvature is too sharp making your fingers literally getting squeezed too much (acute angle) (2) the internal mechanism doesn’t seem to be robust and rigid. We can feel parts moving when you slightly shake the camera. This is something i have never faced in either Sony or Canon or Pentax or Minolta.
I am 50/50 for this gadget. Anyways Nikon is not a great brand when it comes to aesthetics.

This is a wonderful point and shoot camera. Just returned from Turkey and needed all functions I could master up to this point. Exceptional zoom capabilities. Only issues were in low light. Pictures were grainy but I discovered a work around by fiddling with the camera. Have found use the tilting LCD screen a real aid to shooting in crowds and “candid/subject unposed” shots. I’m still discovering features. I recommend this highly for those who don’t want to step up to a DSLR.
I caught it on a day when the price was in the high 200’s. Still a great camera at higher price.
October 28th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
I bought this camera as a birthday gift for my husband. He was really taken away by all the features, especially the zoom. We were really interested in it because of the “steadying” features (we have a little girl that moves A LOT). :c) OH, and the smile recognition feature is SWEET!
October 30th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
We got this camera specifically to take pictures of our hand crafted Malas and Rosaries, Necklaces and Bracelets. We needed magnification that could show the intricate nature of our loops and twists and the beauty of our beads. Although we are not professional photographers at all, we got beautiful pictures.

I bought this camera and was pretty excited about it, I’ve never seen such a cool camera. The touchscreen, the stamps, everything on it seem so awesome but when I got home and start testing it is when I saw it’s true colors.
This camera just can’t get a good picture indoors in fact I can’t get a good pic unless light conditions are perfect. It was so frustraiting, all pics came out grainy so yeah many nice things on this camera but what’s the use of it if it can do everything except take good pics?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:31 pm
A great camera. Took clear, crisp pictures all the time. Easy to use and carry. I would recommend this camera.
